Become An Official
What do you need to do to become an official?
1. You must contact your local minor hockey referee in chief (see attached excel spread sheet with contact info) to ensure there is room and to let him know that you am interested. Ex – if you live in Halifax you must contact the Referee in Chief of Halifax.
2. Attend a clinic to become certified. You must attend an entire day’s clinic. (meaning you can’t miss an hour for a hockey tryout etc) Clinic schedules are online at the HNS website and run from 9am to 5pm. Cost of the clinic for new officials is $110 for level ones and $120 for level two’s. (this includes registration, insurance, rule book, Hockey Canada, and Hockey Nova Scotia Crest)
3. Contact your local RIC again to let him know that you are now certified and wish to start your officiating career!
4. Equipment – You will need; skates, white laces, black helmet with half visor, whistle, jersey, and a pair of black pants. (other equipment is needed as you work higher levels of hockey)
Important qualities of a new official include:
1. Knowledge of the game
2. Skating
3. Physical fitness
4. Attitude
The benefits include:
1. Staying involved in the great game of hockey
2. Physical fitness
3. Great friendships
4. Being involved in important tournaments and championships
5. Spending money (but not much!)
